Lake Okataina Scenic Reserve

Click for Contact Details The Lake Okataina area was an important link in pre-European routes, when canoes were carried from Lake Tarawera to Lake Okataina.Okataina Road follows one of these ancient portage routes.

The Lake Okataina Scenic Reserve is a pristine natural area with native bush down to the waters edge. The reserve is rich in birdlife and contains fine examples of rimu, totara, rata and kahikatea.


Hunting
Deer, wild pigs, goats and more can be found in various locals around the Bay of Plenty. Fishing
Try some of these prime fishing locations and be sure to go home with a fresh catch for dinner. Kayaking

How to Get There

Lake Okataina Scenic Reserve is 22km north-east
of Rotorua on Okataina Road, off State
Highway 30.


Attractions and Facilities

There are numerous walks in the Lake Okataina
area, ranging from short walks to day tramping;
all are accessed from Okataina Road.
The scenic reserve has a number of picnic
spots.

The lake has safe swimming.

There is a boat ramp near a carpark at the end
of the road. Note: The ramp is difficult to launch
from and requires a high skill level.

Public toilets are provided.


Please Remember

Dogs, horses, vehicles (including bicycles
and motorbikes), fires, removal of plants or
animals, camping and hunting without a
permit are not permitted in the reserve.
