Whirinaki/Te Urewera Forests

'Dinosaur' forests of giant trees many centuries old. The eastern ranges of the Bay of Plenty are remote and untouched.

Sanctuary

Click for Contact Details Whirinaki Forest Park offers a variety of short
walks that visit some of the parkís special
features and show off the magnificent ëdinosaurí
forest, dominated by towering examples of
kahikatea, totara, matai, rimu, miro and much
tawa. Birdlife includes rare species, especially
the whio (blue duck), North Island kaka, red
and yellow crowned kakariki, kiwi and kereru.

Hunting
Deer, wild pigs, goats and more can be found in various locals around the Bay of Plenty. Look Outs

How to Get There

Most short walks in the park are reached via
Minginui Road, off Ruatahuna Road past
Murupara on State Highway 38.
Attractions and Facilities

H Tree Track

Access is via Fort Road, off Old Te Whaiti Road.
The main feature is an unusually shaped rimu
tree. The easy, 45-minute loop track runs through
grand podocarp forest. Early mornings and late
afternoons are great times to see and hear the
many native birds, including kaka.

Sanctuary

Access is from Sanctuary Rd, off Minginui Rd.
The Forest Sanctuary protects a striking
remnant of podocarp forest. The track is an
easy loop starting across the stream from the
carpark. (1 hr).

Waiatiu Falls

Access is via River Road, off Old Te Whaiti
Road. The easy track passes through magnificent
podocarp forest to the spectacular falls. The
viewing point is slippery so care is needed.
(1.5hrs return)

Arohaki Lagoon

Access is via River Road, off Old Te Whaiti
Road, to the Arohaki Lagoon carpark. The track
passes through impressive tawa/podocarp forest.
The rain fed lagoon is surrounded by towering
kahikatea and is often alive with frogs. (3-4hrs
return)

Whirinaki Waterfall Track

Access is via River Road, off Old Te Whaiti
Road. This easy loop track follows the Whirinaki
River through superb podocarp forest with
many excellent vantage points. The waterfall
can be heard from some distance. (3-4hrs).

Please Remember

Horses, trail bikes and mountain bikes may not
be used on walking tracks. Hunters and others
must have permits for dogs. Removal of plants
is not permitted.
