Otawa Scenic Reserve

Click for Contact Details Otawa Scenic Reserve in the Papamoa Hills contains attractive lowland forest dominated
by tawa and rewarewa. Wharetetarakeho Trig offers excellent views over the Bay of
Plenty coast. At the Manoeka Road entrance is a pleasant bushwalk and picnic area.

How to Get There

There are two ways into Otawa Scenic Reserve.
At the end of Manoeka Road, off State Highway
2 between Te Puke and Papamoa, a gravel road
leads to a parking and picnic area. The other
entrance, from the top of Upper Papamoa Road,
is along a farm vehicle track across private land,
then past Wharetetarakeho Trig.


Attractions and Facilities

Reservoir Track

(Easy walking, 30mins return)

A well defined track crosses the Kirikiri Stream
into the reserve, continuing through a lovely
puriri grove to a clearing beside Te Puke''''s original
water reservoir. Return the same way.


Upper Papamoa Rd to Manoeka Rd

(Steep in places, 4-8hrs return)

From the Wharetetarakeho Trig, reached from
Upper Papamoa Road, the track enters the
forest and follows a ridgeline to Otawa Trig
(2hrs). Walkers can retrace their steps or
continue for two more hours, descending steeply
to meet the reservoir track at Manoeka Road.
400m past Otawa Trig a right fork leads to
Otanewainuku, 16km and 8hrs away.


Please Remember

Dogs, horses, vehicles (including bicycles and
motorbikes), fires, removal of plants or animals,
camping or hunting are not permitted.
