Training leaders of the future

Care groups in the Western Bay of Plenty are being offered a number of subsidised training sessions on things like Growsafe (for weedspraying), pest control, and first aid. An inspirational trip to Maungatautari Ecological Island is also on the cards.Offering training to your volunteers is one way of nurturing them and growing them into the people needed for the future.

Failing to plan for the success of your group after you leave is likely to mean the waste of your current efforts. Those volunteers you have now, are the leaders of the future, but they won't be if you don't nurture them.

If you want to know more about the training courses, please contact Pete Huggins, Department of Conservation

Moko Antics at Ohope Beach

Moko has been continuing to wow crowds around west-end Ohope Beach. Nearly three weeks ago Moko was noted following a fishing boat out of Gisborne and low and behold, he turns up in Whakatane. There has been lots of interaction, with Moko stealing surfboards and keeping crowds entertained. No major incidents have been reported, with local Marine Mammal permit holders and the Surf Club keeping an eye on things.

The Surf Club have been patrolling the area around Moko and picking up swimmers who become tired while the Coastguard, Waka Ama Club and Rowing Club are aware of people safetywith boats around Moko.

Moko previously spent two years at Mahia before moving to Gisborne for four months. The habitat at Mahia and Gisborne was mainly knee to thigh water depth without surf that enabled him to interact easily with lots of people. At Ohope Beach it is constant surf with people putting themselves at risk by swimming out 40 - 80m to interact with Moko. Staff will continue to monitor the situation to ensure the safety of Moko and keep the public informed.

Stay tuned on the antics by checking out Moko's Ohope Facebook page and Blogsite
